Hand warmers are great for keeping hands toasty on cool days. Hand warmers are also much safer than electric throws, blankets or heating pads for the elderly and children.

Step 1 Take a long cotton sock, fill 1/2 to 3/4 with rice. Tie a knot in open end. Heat in microwave between 1 and 3 minutes. Shake, then test temperature by pressing against inside wrist or cheek. Place on sore muscle, joint, cold hands or cold feet. Reheat as necessary.

Step 2 If you prefer not to use a sock, you can use any long piece of fabric. If you have old (kid size) PJs you can use a sleeve or leg part. Simply cut sleeve off at desired length, turn inside out and stitch one end closed. Turn right side out and fill 1/2 to 3/4 with rice. Tie knot in open end. Heat in microwave for 1 to 3 minutes. Shake, then test temperature by pressing against inside wrist or cheek. Place on sore muscle, joint, cold hands or feet.

Step 3 Depending on amount of use, you will want to clean your warmer at least weekly. Untie knot, discard rice and wash your rice sock with regular laundry. When completely dried refill with clean rice, retie knot and heat as usual
